to be a IT proffessional with programming?

currently I am an earth resources engineering undergraduate at university of moratuwa but I have felt that I am happy when doing computer programming subject. So I would like to choose my carrer in computer programming.
please let me know,
what are the oppertunities that I have with unrelated degree in computer programming?
I am a hard learner so what are the qualifications that I have to earn?
what are the paths to do so?
my friends said that jave scjp will be good, is it true?
with out an IT diploma or degree could I get a job?

after done my engineering degree I have planed to do MBA, then I can go to a higher level of IT management field.
