Sri Lanka’s national telecommunication’s service provider - Mobitel signed yet another strategic partnership with the University of Colombo and its Faculty of Science recently. This partnership enables the Faculty of Science to deliver its Masters and Postgraduate courses via the innovative mLearning solution designed by Mobitel.

The University, which is already using this innovative platform to deliver postgraduate courses at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, would now be able to further broaden its reach and expand its process of dissemination of knowledge with the aid of this new partnership. As an initial step, the Faculty of Science would be offering the Master of Science and Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Applied Electronics via Mobitel’s mLearning system.

mLearning is a state of the art learning solution designed by Mobitel and built on a Microsoft platform. The uniqueness of this platform lies in the fact that it provides an extensible collaborative learning environment where tailor-made mechanisms can be built to provide wide-ranging learning management solutions.

mLearning as an educational tool with wide applications as it combines the most productive elements of current e-learning applications with multiple user interactive video conferencing features, slides, virtual smart boards, material upload facilities, content management facilities and also SMS, email and offline messaging. The system portrays a classroom setting adding a one hundred percent interactive self learning element to the learning process. Most importantly, the mLearning platform breaks the geographical barrier taking learning in Sri Lanka’s education system to new heights.

Professor (Mrs.) Kshanika Hirimburegama, Vice Chancellor, University of Colombo said ‘Collaborations of this nature explore new frontiers of learning and match it with the dynamic needs of the labour market, a timely solution for realizing sustainable high economic growth and development in Sri Lanka. We wish to commend Mobitel in coming forward to support the University of Colombo once again in this endeavour with the same level of passion and enthusiasm as in their first engagement with the university in 2008 at the introduction of mLearning to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.’

Speaking on the partnership, Leisha De Silva Chandrasena, Chairperson, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel said ‘Alliances of this nature can break the traditional barriers to education and promote new concepts of learning within the masses, which is also greatly in accordance with His Excellency the President’s vision for our nation in declaring the year 2009 as the National Year of English and ICT.
