Speaking English our way

17-Mar-2010

Using the English language as a livelihood tool for the youth of the country has been recognized by the Special Presidential Task Force, President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga said.

English Speech had to be given priority for the practical needs of the youth and writing was also to be developed but as English was a foreign language it had to be taught according to the local conditions and demands.

But it was doubtful whether nearly 25,000 teachers were fulfilling this need and performing their task successfully. Lalith Weeratunga made these observations participating in a program 'Let's speak English our Way', at Royal College, Colombo recently. It was necessary that an elementary training should be given to teachers to teach English as was used traditionally by the Sri Lankan society and a new syllabus to achieve that objective will be given soon.

Presidential Task Force Senior Advisor, Sunimal Fernando and other officials were also present.
