7-Sep-2010
MphasiS opened their global delivery centre in Colombo yesterday. Sri Lanka’s Information Technology (IT) industry is playing a proactive role to build the sector and benchmark it in the world, MphasiS CEO Ganesh Ayyar said.

Sri Lanka is a destination that is poised in achieving a high economic growth with much potential. The talent and the capabilities of the country’s IT professionals are outstanding, he said speaking at the inauguration of the MphasiS global delivery centre in Colombo.
“There were three main reasons to select Sri Lanka apart from other countries. One of the main reasons was the educational IT institutions and to build deeper roots with the talent supply chain in Sri Lanka.
The other reason was that the Government of Sri Lanka has much enthusiasm for a sustainable economic growth. The keenness of the Board of Investment (BOI) played an important role in redefining the IT landscape in the country. This caused MphasiS to set up the global delivery centre in Sri Lanka,” Ayyar said.
The CEO said: “Our focus in Sri Lanka is holistic. We have already signed an agreement with a foreign company to move the work to Colombo within the next four weeks.
“This contract will create 500 to 1,000 jobs in Sri Lanka. We believe in employability, while working as a responsible corporate,” he said.
As the initial investment MphasiS has put in US $ 3.5 million. The company invites more international companies to bring in their contracts to Sri Lanka.
MphasiS expects to expand their footprint in the country while increasing its employment capacity by 3000 to 5000 within the next five years in their operation in Sri Lanka.
Employees at the Sri Lanka centre will be a part of MphasiS global talent pool and groomed as a part of MphasiS talent development program.
The launch of MphasiS will boost the Sri Lankan economy and encourage business growth. Companies like MphasiS are providing a platform for our youth to showcase their talents and capability, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said. Board of Investment (BOI) Chairman/Director General, Jayampathi Bandaranayake said the country is going through a momentous time in trying to make a difference in making use of the possibilities.
He said the BOI as the central facilitator for all Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) to Sri Lanka has identified the knowledge based sector as a sector for the growth of the country’s economy. The IT/BPO sector will be one of the most demanded by the country in the near future.
“We want to surprise MphasiS by showing the capabilities of the Sri Lankan talent. The country’s exports will be measured in billions of dollars and replace the millions very soon. The employees that joined the company today should also focus on providing their best to prove that Sri Lanka can,” Bandaranayake said.
