The story behind how Virtusa garnered its name may not be as fascinating as the services that the global IT company provides, but it’s still worth telling. And to perform the honors is the Westborough firm’s chairman and CEO, Kris Canekeratne.

“It was around the time of the dot.com bubble and we were trying to create a new organization out of the erstwhile eRunway, the prior name of Virtusa,” relates Canekeratne. “We ran an internal competition to find a new name for our organization that aligned with our vision of providing innovative, best-in-class solutions to our clients in a cost-effective manner. In a world still a little dizzy over rapid technological change, a locally based software developer says it has an inside track in the race to expand the capabilities of smartphones — perhaps surpassing even laptops and desktop computers.

Sri Lanka's IT-BPO sector is going to be a significant sector for employment generation over the next three years as this sector targets US$ 1 billion in export earnings by 2015, an achievement which requires 85,000 jobs, 45,000 more than currently existing.
