Nanotechnology in Sri Lanka should focus on adding value to the country's commodities which will result in immediate gains for industry, according to noted scientist and nanotechnology researcher, Prof. Veranja Karunaratne of the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology and the University of Peradeniya.
Prof. Karunaratne made these comments in response to a question from the audience at the recently held "Public Lecture on Nanotechnology: Social and Sustainability Issues", organised by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science in Colombo.

Dialog Telekom announced company and group level profit increases for the quarter ending March 31, x2010 as company net profit increased by 313% to Rs.1,276 million and group profit increased by 153% to Rs.705 million compared to the corresponding period in 2009. In a statement released last week, Dialog said it continued to register positive gains in the mobile market during the quarter under review, on the backdrop of aggressive competition.

Having access to an untapped talent pool, getting them at a good price point and becoming a premier employer were the main reasons for global off shoring firm MphasiS choosing Sri Lanka for its newest facility, according to the company's Chief Human Resource Officer R. Elango. Speaking to the Business Times recently, he revealed that his biggest cost was that of employability or, put in laymen's terms, how many weeks to train people to start performing. A number which had initially been 16 weeks but which over time had fallen to 12 weeks currently.

The Certified Management Accountants (CMA) Sri Lanka will be the host management accounting body for the 2nd Global Management Accounting Summit in Sri Lanka later this year. The theme of the Summit is ‘CMA for Sustainable Business’ and provides a number of topics and eminent foreign and local speakers to address sustainability issues. CMA President Lakshman Watawala said the Summit will be held from 29th June to 1st July 2010 in Colombo and its co-hosts are the management accounting bodies of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The IT industry needs 100,000 to 150,000 workforce and is expected to reach US $ one billion in the next two to three years. The ICT industry has progressed significantly in the past five years. Over 40,000 jobs have been created and the size of the industry has grown to reach US $ 275 million.
