Sri Lanka’s telecommunication sector received a record US $ 69 million investment last year. The industry received this boost from five leading operators, Sri Lanka Telecom, Dialog Axiata, Etisalat, Bharathi Airtel and Mobitel. The biggest investment to the sector was made by Bharti Airtel Lanka, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, one of the world’s largest telecom service providers, which was the fifth player in the local mobile market. The company invested US $ 49.9 last year.

Sri Lanka's largest mobile service provider Dialog Axiata PLC is offering Technology scholarships to 54 students, who scored top marks in the field of mathematics at the (General Certificate of Education) A/L (Advance Level) examinations held in 2009 and 2010.

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and Dialog Axiata PLC are expanding their collaboration to increase the reach of the SME Toolkit, an online resource that provides training and management tools to help micro and small enterprises strengthen productivity and gain greater access to new markets.

Dialog Broadband Networks Private Limited (DBN), a fully owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka’s premier mobile services provider Dialog Axiata PLC yesterday entered in to a Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) to acquire 100 percent of the ordinary shares of wireless fixed line operator Suntel Ltd from its current shareholders.

Dialog Axiata PLC announced yesterday the secondment of its Group Chief Marketing Officer Nushad Perera to take up a regional role at the Head Quarters of the Axiata Group Berhad in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Perera’s new role will be in the capacity of a Senior Vice President within the Group Strategy function of the Axiata Group, and will commence in January 2012.

Tackling the global issue of bridging the digital divide, Eisenhower Fellow Brigitte Daniel was in Colombo for a couple of days as part of her tour of South East Asia, looking at various technology solutions and infrastructure models and different types of emerging technologies to address the digital divide issues in the United States.

Dialog Axiata PLC and the Dialog Axiata Group for the six months ended June 30 have recorded strong growth.

The Group recorded strong growth in revenue to reach Rs. 11.1 b in Q2 2011 and Rs. 22.0 b for 1H 2011, an increase of 1% QoQ and 9% Year on Year.

Sri Lanka has a good work ethic compared to other countries, a top corporate official said yesterday.

Dialog Axiata PLC Group CEO Dr Hans Wijayasuriya said compared to other countries, work ethics in Sri Lanka is quite good.

The Dialog Axiata Group recorded a strong growth in revenue to reach Rs 10.9 billion in the first quarter 2011, up 10 percent Year on Year (YoY) whilst posting a net profit of Rs 1.2 billion, up 64 percent compared to Q1 2010.

Earlier it was a price war, but now mobile telecommunication companies are racing to deliver faster broadband speeds.

Just one day after Etisalat launched its 3.75 generation broadband network, Sri Lanka Telecom PLC’s (SLT) Mobitel and Dialog Axiata PLC (Dial) announced that they had conducted successful trials on fourth generation (4G) LTE networks, breaking broadband speed records for the first time in South Asia, they both claimed.

Dialog Axiata Group CEO Dr Hans Wijayasuriya expressed confidence that Sri Lanka would lead the South Asian region in 4G technology within the next two years. “All telecommunication providers would agree that the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka has been proactive in introducing new technologies. As a result, Sri Lankan mobile operators were the first to introduce 3G Network in South Asia taking the move forward, Sri Lanka would pioneer in the region in 4G technology within the next two years,” Dr Wijayasuriya told Daily News Business.

People's Bank, joined Dialog Axiata, to introduce an innovative new service to educate customers on its financial services products via mobile.

This is the first time a Sri Lankan bank is using a mobile platform to push information on its products and services, and the Bank's 12 million strong customer base with Dialog mobiles will now have access to every information on its suite of personal, corporate and development banking products.

Dialog Business Services (Pvt) Ltd (DBS) entered into a Principal Agreement with the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) to establish and operate an IT Enabled Services venture serving domestic and global markets, Colombo Stock Exchange filing said.
