SL telecom sector gets US $ 69 m investments

Sri Lanka’s telecommunication sector received a record US $ 69 million investment last year. The industry received this boost from five leading operators, Sri Lanka Telecom, Dialog Axiata, Etisalat, Bharathi Airtel and Mobitel. The biggest investment to the sector was made by Bharti Airtel Lanka, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, one of the world’s largest telecom service providers, which was the fifth player in the local mobile market. The company invested US $ 49.9 last year.

Mobitel to open call centre in H'tota

Mobitel Lanka is to open a call centre in Hambantota next month. MP Namal Rajapaksa said that this is expected to be located in the proposed IT Park in Hambantota. He said that a local real estate company has come forward to build a 3,000-room apartment complex near the proposed IT Park.

Mobitel and T-Navi offer traffic navigation system

Mobitel has partnered with T-Navi (Private) Ltd to offer the latest traffic navigation solution to travellers making their lives easier, less stressful and more productive. The T-Navi solution is available in three formats – as a Mobile Phone Application for Smartphones, a Personal Navigation Device (PND) to be fitted in motor vehicles and as a Software SD Card for 2DIN Devices, according to a Mobitel statement.

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the national mobile service provider subscriber base increased over the past five years to 3.8 million in November 2010 from 393,000 in November 2005. The Upahara postpaid package designed for greater inclusivity of the state sector, clergy and pensioners became a huge success with over 500,000 new additions in less than three months, Suren J. Mobitel : Powering an ICT enabled Nation

In 2005, the Government, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared the importance of the role of ICT in Sri Lanka’s future development. The recognition of ICT as a driver in economic development by the President precedes his term in office as President, when as Prime Minister he nurtured and propagated the Nenasala concept. The seriousness of that commitment was reflected by the inclusion of ICT in the Mahinda Chinthana. This was followed by a greater level of infocomm adoption by the government. A telecom regulatory policy that encouraged investment in new technology was introduced, and the year 2009 was declared as the Year of ICT and English.

Mobitel makes Rs 336 m profit in Q2

Mobitel has recorded a profit before tax (PBT) of Rs 440 million, compared to the loss of Rs 34 million in the second quarter of the previous year in the second quarter. Profit after tax for the second quarter 2010 is Rs 336 million as against Rs 36 million loss in the second quarter of 2009, making an impressive turnaround.
